motorcycle-gpsYour motorcycle GPS unit can save you when you’re running out of gas, help you find attractions on your trip, rescue you when you are lost, and a variety of other features that can make your motorcycle travels much less stressful.  Some GPS systems for motorcycles have PDA, wireless Internet, and hands-free capability.  However, there are many questions to ask before you choose a GPS device for your motorcycle.

What type of GPS would fit the make and model of your motorcycle?  Do the reception coverage area and battery life of the device suit your particular needs?  Do you want 2-way radio communication?   How easily can you update the GPS you want? Last but not least, what is your budget?

Ever since buying my first Harley-Davidson a few years ago, I’ve dreamed of the day I could set out across the country with the open road as my only limitation. There’s something primal and romantic about leaving home for a few weeks at a time without any particular destination in mind. I’ve decided that I won’t create an itinerary; I’ll base my travel plans on the people I meet along the way.

Preparing for the trip took some time, of course. I wouldn’t embark on a serious road trip without doing some logistical homework. First was the matter of budgeting for gas and attaching some large saddlebags to my hog. Then I went online and bought a Magellan motorcycle GPS – it’s just the sort of thing I’ll need to negotiate the back roads of the American Southwest.
